Think history and think of the examples of men who practiced homosexuality. Plato, Shakspeare, Oscar Wilde, Nuriev. Many more. Think of women. Pardon, women cannot practice "homosexuality" they can only practice lesbianism. You think: Sappho. In fact, many people will first know about Sappho's love of other women before they will know she was a great poetess and was compared to Homer. You will not know that in a male dominated society, Sappho was acknowledged to be a genius of a rare caliber. In a society where women, at a time, were considered something they are today: cattle like animals without a right to freedom of speech, thought and action. Males were superior and women knew their place. Males argued among themselves (and did not get a reputation for that but had their arguments acknowledged and judged on a merit) thought, fought and built, and made love while women were no politcal power, no moral power and no standing whatsoever and they gossiped and maintained male's reality.
But back to the subject of this essay. Why do we know think "gay" when we hear Shakspeare's name? Yes, we know he wrote sonnetts to another dude, but we don't classfy Shaksepeare as a primarily "gay" writer. Why do we do this to female writers or musicians or other accomplished female people? Why do we know his (Shakspeare's) work by merit but we do not know Sappho's work thusly? By the way, she took lovers of both genders, just like Shakspeare. And definitely unlike Oscar Wilde who was, well, flaming, and was married out of "must" and never took any female lovers. Why the only thing that distinguishes a great poet is her sexuality whereas a male poet gets judged and acknowledged on the merits of the medium he is using? Why? You will say "Oscar Wilde". Yes, but do you not see the difference even here? He was open about his sexuality in time when it was no accepted and in fact paraded it! He was flamboyant! And he made himself a great name largely because he dared to defy society he lived in, his work on its own merits in the light of traditional style and manner was not considered to be classic. Although it was good. But Sappho NEVER was flamboyant neither was she running around getting arrested for taking a female lover. And she lived in time and place when that behavior was accepted, much more than it today. Ancient greeks offically proclaimed women to be inferior and took men for their lovers. Apprarently they applied their logic to everyone and assumed that a talented woman must be, well, into same sex because...they were! And they and the society at large did not see a problem there. So, since Sappho did not come to be distinguished through her sexuality in her times, unlike Oscar Wilde, there is no historical interest in her sexuality. So what is that perverted obsession with reducing every woman to a baby maker or a labia licking lesbian? Sappho was beautiful, wise, smart and perceptive. She lived in peace. She did not wage war on others and take away others' dignity and life. She wrote her work and studied nature, and was humble and kind. Why the only thing that descendants remember is her sexuality? Why not Shakspeare? Why do we not study Sappho in school? Why not Virgian Wolfe? Why not Agatha Chirstie? Why not Betty Friedan? Why not Mary Daly? Why not Sophia Kovalevskya as a role model?
EVENING STAR by Sappho
You are the herdsman of evening
Hesperus, you herd
homeward whatever
Dawn's light dispersed
You herd sheep - herd
goats - herd children
home to their mothers.
